The first lift in Oddsskarð was put into operation in 1980. In 1990, a second lift was added, taking over where the 1980 lift ends. This created a continuous 1257.9-meter lift system, starting at 513 meters above sea level and reaching 840 meters at the top. In 1986, a rope tow was installed in the children’s slope. A new children’s lift was opened in 1999, replacing the old rope tow. The children’s slope is now called Sunshine Slope as it catches the first morning sun.

The ski lodge was built in 1986. The lodge offers food service and sleeping bag accommodation for up to 35 people. A snow groomer was first used in the area in 1988, and flood lighting was installed in 1994. The ski area is recognized by FIS, the International Ski Federation, and is authorized to host international ski competitions.

The ski area in Tungudalur offers diverse slopes suitable for everyone. In the valley bottom, there’s a children’s lift for those taking their first turns. Directly in front of Sandfell are soft but steep slopes that are only partially groomed, making it easy to ski off-piste.

Further into the valley at the Miðfell lift, there are gentler slopes for intermediate skiers and experienced skiers who don’t want to push themselves too hard! From the lift’s end, it’s perfect to put your skis on your back and walk up to Miðfell to enjoy the view. On the southern side of Miðfell is a steep and fun slope. From the end of the Miðfell lift, there are gentle slopes down to the valley bottom that are perfect for families.

Snowboarders are certainly not left out.
When conditions allow, staff create jumps, boardercross tracks, and other features to keep boarders entertained.

Seljalandsdalur is almost always open when weather permits outdoor activities. Trails are groomed as early in the day as possible. It’s best to check the ski area’s information line at 878 1011. Skiers who practice their sport after dark can turn on the trail lighting.

2.5, 3.5, and 5 km loops are groomed. From Seljalandsdalur, roads lead in all directions though not all have groomed trails. It’s easy to go from there to Breiðadalsheiði and down to Engidalur. You can also go up to Kistufell and down to Hnífsdalur or over to Bolungarvík.
In Tungudalur, a loop is groomed on the golf course and through the forest area when snow conditions allow. The Fossavatn Ski Marathon is held annually around the end of April/beginning of May.

Both areas have complete lighting. Cross-country skiers turn on the trail lighting themselves at Seljalandsdalur, with the switch located outside the ski lodge. The last person should remember to turn off the lights.

The first 300 meters of the main slope are suitable for beginners, with good steeps above that. There are also good trails for cross-country skiers and a great area for snowboarders.

The Top lift opened in March 2019 and transforms the area with endless routes down. The lift is 1000 meters long, starting at 600 meters above sea level and reaching 918 meters above sea level at its end.
