For off-piste skiing, there are many slopes outside the ski areas, but please note that active avalanche protection is only available on marked ski runs and lifts when the ski areas are open. Get avalanche safety training and check the Icelandic Met Office avalanche forecast before venturing into slopes and gullies outside the ski areas.
Outside operating hours, the ski areas are closed to the public due to staff operations. When blue warning lights are flashing, all traffic on ski slopes is strictly prohibited as it is life-threatening to be on the slopes due to the winch cables of snow groomers.
