The ski area in Tungudalur offers diverse slopes suitable for everyone. In the valley bottom, there’s a children’s lift for those taking their first turns. Directly in front of Sandfell are soft but steep slopes that are only partially groomed, making it easy to ski off-piste.
Further into the valley at the Miðfell lift, there are gentler slopes for intermediate skiers and experienced skiers who don’t want to push themselves too hard! From the lift’s end, it’s perfect to put your skis on your back and walk up to Miðfell to enjoy the view. On the southern side of Miðfell is a steep and fun slope. From the end of the Miðfell lift, there are gentle slopes down to the valley bottom that are perfect for families.
Snowboards are of course not left out.
When conditions allow, staff create jumps, boardercross tracks, and more to keep snowboarders entertained.
Seljalandsdalur is almost always open when weather permits outdoor activities. Trails are groomed as early in the day as possible. It’s best to check the ski area’s information line at 878 1011. Skiers who practice their sport after dark can turn on the trail lighting.
2.5, 3.5, and 5 km loops are groomed. From Seljalandsdalur, roads lead in all directions though not all have groomed trails. It’s easy to go from there to Breiðadalsheiði and down to Engidalur. You can also go up to Kistufell and down to Hnífsdalur or over to Bolungarvík.
In Tungudalur, a loop is groomed on the golf course and through the forest area when snow conditions allow. The Fossavatn Ski Marathon is held annually around the end of April/beginning of May.
Both areas have perfect lighting. Hikers can turn on the trail lighting at Seljalandsdalur themselves, with the switch located on the outside of the ski lodge. The last person should remember to turn off the lights.
