The municipalities of Reykjavík, Mosfellsbær, Seltjarnarnes, Kópavogur, Hafnarfjörður, and Garðabær, which jointly operate the capital region’s ski areas, signed an agreement on May 7, 2018, to undertake renovations of the ski areas in the coming years.
According to the agreement, three chairlifts in Bláfjöll will be renewed and installed, and the chairlift in Skálafell will be renovated. Furthermore, snow-making equipment will be installed in both Bláfjöll and Skálafell. Alongside these projects, continued development of the cross-country skiing area and improved facilities for cross-country skiers will be undertaken.
These projects represent the first of two phases in the complete development of the ski areas, based on the proposed vision for their development and operation until 2030.

Bláfjöll

  • New chairlift Drottning in a modified position along with necessary measures and adaptation of slopes and terminals. Estimated lift launch is autumn 2023
  • New chairlift Gosi in Suðurgil in a modified position along with necessary measures and adaptation of slopes and terminals. Estimated implementation time 2022.
  • Used chairlift in Eldborgargil along with necessary modifications to terminals. Estimated implementation time 2026.
  • New T-bar lift from Kerlingadalur. Estimated implementation time 2026.

Skálafell

  • Used chairlift with necessary modifications to terminal facilities. Estimated timing 2023.

Snow Production

  1. snow production phase – Bláfjöll; home area, Kóngsgil and Öxlin. Estimated implementation time 2024
  2. snow production phase – Skálafell. Estimated implementation time 2025

The above project sequence and timing may change if technical or planning circumstances arise that require timeline revision.

Cross-Country Ski Trails

Continued development of the cross-country skiing area will be carried out with the installation of snow fences, poles, and signs, while the third phase of snow production will help ensure snow coverage on trails and extend the season for cross-country skiers.

  • Excellent conditions for cross-country skiing
  • Well-organized training areas planned in consultation with ski clubs
  • Competition facilities meeting international standards
  • Snow-making at both areas improving snow quality and ensuring operational stability

  • Accommodation and teaching facilities in Bláfjöll for school groups

Cost

The estimated cost for these developments during 2019-2026 is about 5.1 billion ISK. The cost distribution among municipalities is based on population, with the City of Reykjavík’s share expected to be about 56% of the total cost.
